Explaining how to become an editor is not at all simple. There is no school or anyone who can attest to their professionalism "a priori". How to do it then? I could try to venture into very long speeches on the love of books, writing, the word. But I would be rhetorical and only say things so obvious that no one would care. I could say that you have to study, waste time and money on courses that, generally, last a long time and cost too much. All the same, however, I would not be able to exhaust the topic, because if it is true that there are techniques and methods that can only be learned through study, it is equally true that knowing them is not enough to make the difference between a reader, a proofreader drafts and an editor. So I decided to use a different criterion.
A deductive method. I will tell you about my personal experience and it will be up to you to draw the right conclusions from this speech. I have always had a certain inclination towards writing. Embarrassing Special Data when I think back to the essays I was forced to read aloud in class and all the people who urged me to write about this and that when instead I had no other ambition than to keep my diaries and live my life. So I studied and did other things. I read and wrote without any aim of making them more than delightful pastimes, at least up to a certain point. About three years ago things changed. I had recently started a blog, I liked writing more and more so I decided that perhaps I could try to do it in a more reasoned way.
I had no knowledge of what it meant to be an editor and I had no idea, perhaps, that there was a professional figure dedicated to taking care of manuscripts before publication. So I continued to write, addressing the very varied world of short story competitions. I write one and, needless to say, I place second in the Black Prize. It seems like a paradox but my first literary success was perhaps the beginning of the end of my writing career. In fact, immediately after the placement, the organization of the award asked me to join the jury and I happily accepted. Thus I begin to realize everything it means to read, evaluate, deal with stories that work and others that have no rhyme or reason.
